History Laboratory of Theoretical Physics

The Laboratory of Theoretical Physics was founded in 1963 and was initially named the Theoretical Department. Before 2003, it was headed by Prof. Valter A. Ignatchenko. Theoretical investigations of the Laboratory were initiated by the experiments carried out at the Institute of Physics. Since 2003, the Laboratory has been headed by Prof. Valery V. Val’kov. At the Laboratory, in progress were investigations related to the quantum theory of magnetism, theory of strongly correlated electron systems, theory of high-temperature superconductivity, and theory of propagation of different types of waves in media with regular and irregular inhomogeneities.

Some of the theoretical investigations were related to the experiments carried out at the Laboratory of Physics of Magnetic Phenomena led by Leonid Vasil'evich Kirensky, specifically, to the theory of domain structure and magnetization reversal, theory of spin and magnetoelastic waves, and theory of NMR in ferromagnets. The phenomenon of magnetic resonance in ferromagnets was predicted. In addition, the new (inverse) mechanism of the spin echo excitation was predicted and experimentally implemented and the theory of ordering in dipole systems was developed. The theory of nonlinear waves and generation of stochastic processes in dynamical systems was developed. Advances in these fields had led to separation of the Laboratory of the Theory of Nonlinear Processes (headed by G. M. Zaslavsky) in 1973.

The investigations in the field of the theory of resonance interaction between laser radiation and condensed matter were continued in 1975 at the Laboratory of Coherent Optics under the leadership of Alexander K. Popov.

In 1980, the successful investigations in the field of the quantum theory of magnetic ordering in metals and alloys led to separation of the Laboratory of Solid State Physics (headed by Evgeny V. Kuzmin from 1980 till 1995 and by Valery V. Val’kov from 1995 till 2003.
