Two-photon dynamics in the coherent Rydberg atomic ensemble
The effective interaction between single photons in macroscopic media was established [1]. The effect of electromagnetically induced transparency prevents photon absorption in a medium and, at the same time, favors the formation of a mixed state between an atom and a photon (the so-called dark-state polariton). The excited state of an atom is assumed to be the Rydberg state, which allows the affective interaction between two dark-state polaritons to be implemented due to the van der Waals force. We implemented the almost ideal cross-phase modulation between two single photons. This system is promising for other quantum transformations between single photons.
